The series takes place in the futuristic town of Gouha and stars Yuga Oudou, a fifth-grade, elementary school student, who loves both inventions and dueling. Feeling that the current rules of the Duel Monsters card game are too stifling, Yuuga successfully manages to install a new set of rules of his own creation known as "Rush Duel", allowing for more fast-paced and frantic dueling. In futuristic Den City, people duel using digital cards in the VR space "LINK VRAINS" managed by SOL Technology, Inc. A mysterious organization known as the Knights of Hanoi hacks into LINK VRAINS in search of a runaway AI program, Ignis. One duelist with the username "Playmaker" stands against this threat. His true identity is high school student Yuusaku Fujiki, a skilled hacker with a dark past and a grudge against Hanoi. When he becomes the first to capture Ignis, a struggle between Yuusaku, SOL Technology, and the Knights of Hanoi ensues.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters centers around the journey of the spirit of an ancient Egyptian pharaoh who is trying to re-discover who he was many years ago, since he has lost his memories. With the help of a boy, Yugi Mutou, the one who awakened the spirit, and his friends, he battles many villains and adversaries. Many of the villains have been linked to the Nameless Pharaoh's past, due to the Millennium Puzzle he holds and many try to take the puzzle and his power away from him. 
The series focuses on the card game aspect of it and the main theme represented throughout the series is friendship.

Thanks to the Leo Corporation, headed by Reiji Akaba, new advancements to Solid Vision, the holographic system that gives life to the Duel Monsters card game, give physical mass to monsters and environments, allowing players to interact directly with them. This has given birth to challenging Action Duels, in which duelists may traverse environments to locate Action Cards to help them in a pinch. The story follows Yuya Sakaki, a second year middle school student at Miami City's You Show Duel School, whose father disappeared three years ago when he was scheduled for an important duel. While facing off against the current Action Duel champion, Yuya awakens a new power from his pendant, known as Pendulum Summoning.

Duel Academy, one of the most prestigious schools in Duel Monsters history. There, students learn the fundamentals of becoming not just duelists, but large business owners.

Judai Yuki is a new student with only one thing on his mind: to become the next King of Games. Judai meets several friends, teachers, and even enemies at the large Dueling school. There, he'll have to face off against several different dorms&mdash;Slifer Red, Ra Yellow, and Obelisk Blue&mdash;to become the number one duelist. Will Judai be able to pass all of them?

Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's is set in Neo Domino City some time after the events concerning Yugi Mutou (DM) and Judai Yuki (GX). A new form of dueling, "Riding Duels", now take place on motorcycles called "D-Wheels". While regular dueling still exists, Riding Duels have become a popular form of entertainment for spectators, who watch them in specially-designed stadiums.

The story takes place in the near future in a city called Heartland. Tsukumo Yuma is a young duelist who strives to become the Duel Monsters champion, despite being an amateur. One day, during a duel with a school bully, a mysterious spirit called Astral appears before Yuma, and helps him to win. Astral then explains to Yuma that he is searching for his lost memories, which have been transformed into 99 "Xyz Monster" cards called "Numbers" and have been scattered across the globe. The "Numbers" have the ability to possess the duelists who own them and bring out their darkest desires. In order to recover his memories, and collect the "Numbers" cards, Astral teams up with Yuma.

The continuation of Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal. 
A new enemy has been revealed - Barian. They wish to gather the "Numbers" and destroy the Astral World to avoid their own world's destruction. As such, Yuma and his friends are their prime target, and the Barian begin to slowly enter Heartland City.
