Excel Saga is a one-of-a kind work of art that can only be described as the ultimate parody of anime. From the opening credits - a rather odd spoof of Japanese pop videos - to the ending song featuring Menchi the dog singing/barking a plaintive ballad while a human interpreter translates for viewers, nothing is sacred in the world of Excel Saga.

Earnest young girls Excel and Hyatt (both codenames) hold down minimum-wage jobs to support their true avocation: trying to conquer the city of Fukuoka for the secret organization ACROSS and its dreamy dictator, Il Palazzo--a man whose dignity is such that he could never acknowledge that ACROSS consists of himself, a leaky basement, two unpaid teenage interns, and a stray dog. But society is all to blame, as creator Rikdo Koshi takes aim at everything from organized religion to public television, in a manga that makes reindeer spit blood and puts puppies on the dinner menu.

Poemi Watanabe (a.k.a. Kobayashi) is a 10-year-old girl with aspirations of being a famous voice actress. Unfortunately, her school grades are bad and her voice acting is even worse. But when a mysterious alien kills her parents and wreaks havoc all over Tokyo, Poemi grabs a talking fish, skins it into a wand and becomes the magical girl Puni Puni Poemi to save the day.
