Mion is the oldest kid in Keiichi's class. As the elder, she is the class president and everyone looks up to her as the leader. She acts like a perverted tomboy and calls herself old man, but has a hidden girlish side. Mion is next in line to be the head of the Sonozaki household, one of the Three Families which holds tremendous influence in Hinamizawa. Often when playing games with her fellow club members she is known for her ruthlessness, often coming up with the most embarrassing penalties for the losers.  Mion also serves as the leader of the main characters' gaming club.

Continuing from the first series, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai begins to shed some light on the dark mysteries prevalent in the preceding season. The young group of friends in the town of Hinamizawa continue to enter terrible conflicts with one another in their never ending summer of 1983, often ending with the brutal murder of one of their numbers. Furude Rika, with the help of her spiritual friend Hanyuu, tackles challenges over and over, trying her best to keep their lives from coming to a tragic end. After losing a bet, Keichi, Mion, Rena, Satoko and Rika parade around the town in costumes. When they come to a fork in the road, they decide to go to Yagouchi, a nearby abandoned village. Once there Keichii and Rena learn the mystery of a strange haunted quarry as they debate whether or not to check it out.

The endless cycle of murders has been broken and Rika is finally able to settle down for a normal life with her friends. However, she is involved in a traffic accident and wakes up in a world where everything is different. A world where no one commited the sins that shaped them into the persons they are. It's up to Rika to discover the truth behind this world and whether or not it truly is perfect.

With things such as story out of the way, Higurashi cranks up the fanservice with Kira, a new OVA series to commemorate the series' 10th anniversary, featuring nail-biting situations such as Rika and Satoko becoming magical girls to battle evil magic crime syndicates with the help of their trusty squad of cheerleaders, among other things.

An epilogue to Matsuribayashi-hen where Rika and the others, including Hany&#363;, go on a summer vacation to heal their hearts, so to speak, after everything they have been through.

Hirukowashi-hen is based on Higurashi Daybreak. The main characters are Keiichi Maebara and Rika Furude, and this story is set in a parallel world. One day, Rena accidentally swallows something in her mouth during her usual treasure hunting. According to Rika, the seal of the sacred "Fuwarazu Magatama" pairs were broken and Rena must have accidentally swallowed one of them. The magatama holds mysterious magical powers in which a person that has the red magatama will blindly fall in love with anyone with the white magatama.

An officially published doujinshi anthology series for Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, created by several artists based upon reader submitted stories, and compiled into volumes by Ryukishi07. 

This chapter of the Higurashi no Naku Koro ni series, called the "Mahjong" chapter, is related to a "dramatic mahjong" game being released for the PSP in November 2009. This time, Keiichi (a boy who moved to the small village of Hinamizawa), finds himself drawn into a special mahjong course at his school.

The volume includes two different stories: a namesake adaptation of the Renapan minigame and a namesake adaptation of Batsukoishi-hen from Rei. It has not been released outside Japan.
